Reimagine.

Samvaad, since 2014, has emerged as an ecosystem that brings together tribes of India and beyond for constructive dialogue. It enables key elements of tribal identity to thrive, be celebrated and fed into the dialogue and fosters a youth peer group who drive positive change. It has brought together more than 30,000 women, men and children from 157 tribes across 25 states and five Union Territories of India and 17 countries, who have reinstated faith in the Samvaad ecosystem, time and again, in impartial contemplation of tribal narratives, balanced with celebration of rich tribal culture, music, folklore and beyond. This ecosystem, each year, is held together by an underlying theme which is contextual and resonant for dialogue throughout the year and the five-day annual event held during November. The theme has matured from specific domains like tribal languages, leadership, culture, healing practices among others, leading to broader pivots of conversations on Tribalism Today and Coming Together for Social Change.

Coming together for social change.

Drawing from the takeaway of Samvaad 2017 theme, it was learnt that there are inherent aspects of tribalism that places seamlessness as a core value of society. This has been endorsed by some inspiring stories of tribal communities coming together to positively influence their core developmental challenges. The intention of Samvaad 2018 was to understand this congruence and harmony that bind the tribal communities together, and shine a light on these aspects for a larger community. During the course of the dialogue it was learnt that collectivization amongst communities manifests in either or all of the following three ways: • There are social and cultural norms that organically create seamless societies • There are groups that come together often united by a common cause without any external frameworks • And there are groups that come together with the assistance of external frameworks like
NGOs, SHGs and the like.

Aspiration of Tribal Youth & Leadership for Future.

In early 2017, the Company started working with 93 tribal young boys and girls from 55 tribes to identify keen young minds with a holistic and strategic vision for the country. Seeing merit in developing and nurturing, young talent, Samvaad 2017 was themed as ‘Aspiration of Tribal Youth & Leadership for Future’. The objective was to identity more such youth leaders and empower them through exercises, workshops and dialogue so when they go back to their communities, they sow seeds of improvement and societal change in fields of education, nutrition, filmmaking, sports and exhibit leadership skills to take their community forward.

The second session was linked to the theme of this year’s Samvaad which is ‘Tribal Medicinal Systems’. The third session was reserved for their traditional poetry, songs, music, folklore.

They are tribes, yes, for the purpose of political classification, but they are not a homogeneous people. They vastly differ from each other in language, culture, social structure, livelihood and decision-making process.
